Implants for Hip Replacement
Dr. Ajoy Jana - Hip Replacement Surgeon
Several companies make hip implants and your surgeon will choose the best implant for you based on your age, activity level, bone density and anatomy.
Hip Replacement Implant InformationA total hip replacement implant has three parts:
The femoral stem is made of titanium or cobalt-chromium alloy and it can be secured with cement or have a porous surface to allow for bone ingrowth. The prosthetic hip ball is made from cobalt-chromium alloy or ceramic, and it is highly polished to minimize friction and wear of the prosthetic cup. The cup is made of titanium alloy with an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene liner that snaps in to it. In the US, surgeons almost always use a porous-coated cup with one to three screws placed through the cup for extra fixation. In general, porous-coated components are preferred for patients with good bone density, as they may be less likely to loosen over time.
